Vinícius Peripato, a landscape scientist involved in the research, said the findings challenge the idea that the pre-Columbian Amazon was simply a jungle refuge for small, isolated bands. “These structures are not random,” Peripato said. “They show that people were engineering the land and living together in organized ways over long periods of time.” His team’s findings support earlier estimates that millions of people may have lived across the Amazon before the arrival of Europeans.
The Myth of the Untouched Jungle
The evidence also changes the way scientists think about the Amazon’s famous biodiversity. If ancient peoples cleared, planted and maintained large stretches of forest for centuries, then parts of the rainforest we consider wild may actually be shaped by human hands. Researchers point to patches of dark soil known as terra preta, which are packed with charcoal, bones and pottery fragments. These enriched soils are often found near geoglyphs and other archaeological sites, suggesting that ancient inhabitants improved the ground for farming rather than simply cutting and abandoning the land.
That insight has practical consequences for conservation. Instead of treating the rainforest as a fragile wilderness that must be sealed off from humans, preservation efforts could learn from ancient land-use practices. The earthworks themselves are also fragile. Even mild erosion, plowing or forest clearing can quickly flatten a trench that survived for 1,500 years in the sediment. Several known glyph sites have already been damaged by modern ranching and soy farming, and new discoveries are being made only just in time for the threats to close in.
What Comes Next
The research team plans to combine the lidar maps with ground surveys and excavations in order to understand who built the glyphs and why. The next phase will involve collecting soil samples for more precise dating, searching for pottery and tools, and analyzing the shape and orientation of the structures to identify possible astronomical alignments. Researchers are also using machine learning to scan additional lidar datasets, hoping to find even more glyphs hidden underneath unexplored stretches of the Amazon basin.
There is great urgency in this work. Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has cleared large areas where unrecorded archaeological sites may exist. When trees are removed, the fragile earthworks that remained covered for centuries become exposed to heavy rain, looting and agricultural machinery. Scientists say a buried glyph that has escaped notice for 2,000 years can be destroyed in a single season of burning.
The discovery is also a reminder that the history of the Americas is far longer and more complex than earlier textbooks suggested. The ancient engineers of the Amazon did not simply survive on the forest’s margins; they made the environment productive and resilient. Understanding how they did it, before their societies collapsed under the weight of disease and conquest, may offer valuable lessons for the future of land management, biodiversity protection and climate resilience.
With hundreds of the strange symbols now mapped and counting, the ancient Amazon is no longer invisible beneath the trees. Each new scan brings to light another reminder that the rainforest’s history was written not only in leaves and rivers, but also in ditches, mounds and monumental marks etched into the earth by human hands.
